Railay is NOT a good place for you to stay with a small child unless you can afford the Rayavadee www.rayavadee.com - all the other resorts offer v poor service - waiting an hour for a meal might be just about OK when you are just with your other half, but becomes miserable when you have a hungry tot's tum to fill
Forget hectic Phi Phi & Phuket, they are not good places to take a small child. These are the best destinations for families with small children:
1) Khao Sok
It offers the best elephant trekking in the region, plus great river canoeing
You get to stay in a bugfree 2 bedroom treehouse - this resort is only bugfree only if you go for the better treehouses.
2) Ao Nang
There are lots of accommodation options available, a Pavilion Suite at the Golden Beach is a good choice, but you don't get nighttime privacy from your children with this unit. If you book a Family Deluxe at the Haleeva, you get a two bedroom suite, in a resort with a pool.
There is lots to do with small children around Ao Nang. It's best to pick some of the following, then we can quote you on one or two private daytrips to cover the things you want to do (private = better by far when you have a tot in tow). You can't do all the tours below in one day without getting exhausted:
The Phi Phi snorkelling is a join-on trip which may or may not be right for people with small children, as you have to get in and out of the speedboat 7 times. The Ao Thalane kayaking trip is a soft one suitable for children, and is followed by a dip.
From Ao Nang you can independantly visit Railay, which is 15 minutes away by boat. If you like we can show you round Railay. Or we can draw you a map and you can explore without a guide, it would save money and when you are going with a small child you can't do many of the things in the daytrip, so maybe just take some free advice and instructions and go off and explore by yourselves.
3) Koh Yao Noi
The upmarket Paradise resort is wonderful. You can take a private lagoon kayaking trip with optional deep water soloing (private is good with a small child, so you can set your own agenda without worrying about what other people want):
This is an easy-going half day out which includes a market visit, a beach visit then a restaurant visit.
There is a good snorkelling and kayaking trip which can be combined with a transfer to Ao Nang, so you go beachfront to beachfront - instead of a boring transfer, you get to have a cool day out while moving on somewhere new.
4) Koh Lanta
Baan Lanta is a good resort on Lanta's best beach, voted Thailand's best beach by the UK's Sunday Times:
Lanta is good for snorkelling daytrips. These are only join-on. The Koh Rok trip is the best one for small children, as there isn't much getting in and out of speedboats with that one.
