Mountain Resort, Koh Lipe
Independent Review
Introduction
If you’re willing to climb 79 steps several times a day in order to enjoy peace, quiet and superb views, then this is the place for you. You don’t have to do this with your luggage when arriving and leaving, as guys run up and down with your luggage for you. Perched above the lovely beach and sandspit at the northern end of Sunrise beach, and enjoying sensational views of the straits across to Koh Adang, this resort offers several reasonably priced and worthwhile room types.

The shared reception/restaurant/bar area of the resort is functional rather than impressive, but is clean and well maintained. The visitor doesn’t anyway really notice the rather boring architecture here, as the view is so captivating.
 |
The Mountain Resort has some of the most reasonably priced air-con rooms on Koh Lipe, along with the Bundhaya Resort on Pattaya beach. Unlike the resorts on Pattaya beach, the Mountain Resort doesn’t suffer from longtail boat traffic noise. It does however suffer from a poor reputation for service.
|
Choosing between the Mountain and Bundhaya resorts can be tricky, but here are a few tips: (a) if you want to be near the restaurants and bars on and near Pattaya beach, stay at the Bundhaya (b) if you want to stay at a beachfront resort and pop in and out of the water several times a day, stay at the Bundhaya (c) if you have accompanying children or mobility issues stay at the Bundhaya (d) otherwise, stay at the Mountain Resort.
Accommodation
Fan Standard
 |
These are some of the cleanest and smartest fan bungalows on the island. Some have superb views over to Koh Adang, and all have comfy verandahs. The best of these units are on the A row, which is nearest the sea. |
Air-con Standard
These are the same as the Fan Standard rooms, but with air-con. The best of the rooms are the ones nearest the sea. The ones towards the back of the resort are a fair walk up the hill, and the trees in between obscure the view. The best unit is A8, the next best is B6.
VIP Air-con
 |
These smarter rooms are much bigger than the Bundhaya rooms at a similar price, and are better equipped with a fridge and hot water. These units come in two types, the old type and the new type. These are the same, except the better new type have a front wall made of glass, so making them much more airy and light. The best units are numbers 1 to 3, as they have really great views. The difference in the views you get with different rooms is large - with some of these units you get a sensational view, with others an almost non-existent one. |
Twin Fan Room
These confusingly named units have 2 bedrooms. They have fans and hot water and share the same balcony. There are 2 of these units in the resort, with nothing to choose between them, they are both equally good.
Superior
 |
These larger bungalows have hot water and air-con. The ones with the best seaviews are S2, S3 & S4. |
Deluxe
 |
These are the same as the Superior units, except they have better locations. They come in 2 types (a) type A are down on the beach (b) type B are up near reception, and offer one of the most panoramic views in Thailand.
The best of the type B units are numbers 4, then 5, then 6. |
