Bangtao Lagoon Bungalows, Phuket
Independant Review
The Bangtao Lagoon Bungalows resort gets mixed reviews on www.tripadvisor.com, as the rooms are dated and a bit scruffy, and the bathrooms are slightly grotty. This travel writer inspected three rooms, all of which looked a bit tired, and had bathrooms that could do with refurbishment. All had ancient air-con units that looked prime candidates for keeping the occupants awake at night.
The more expensive rooms aren’t good value for money compared to nearby resorts such as Bangtao Beach Chalets, but the smaller fan rooms are excellent value for money. They are a good choice for budget travelers looking for a basic bungalow on a quiet beach. One thing that www.tripadvisor.com contributors are unanimous about is this resort’s setting, which is fantastic.
The resort occupies a large, prime beach-front plot and contains only 54 bungalows, so the visitor density on the beach is low, even in peak season. The resort’s beach bar serves reasonably-priced and tasty food and drinks, and is a great place to hang out, if you can put up with the 50’s oldies to which the bar-manager is addicted – “yummy yummy yummy, I’ve got love in my tummy” wasn’t a good song, even back then. Thankfully the volume is kept low.
This is a great place to spend time, even if you aren’t staying here. Bangtao Beach is Phuket’s best choice for those after a quiet beach with a bit of life, and this resort occupies a prime location on it. It’s one of Phuket’s more peaceful spots, and an ideal place for tired travelers to allow the sea-breezes to blow the city stress out of them. Those who can afford the better rooms here are advised not to stay here at all, but to stay at the nearby Bangtao Beach Chalets Resort instead, and to hang out at the beach here at the Bangtao Lagoon Bungalows.
A good choice for families on a budget, this resort has lots of space for children to run around in, play French cricket in, even play football in. Usually Thai resorts build bungalows right up to the beach, affording the front row bungalows a great view but depriving those behind them of one. This resort has been built very differently – a full 100 metres by 60 metres of space has been left untouched directly behind the beach. Mature casuarinas trees provide shade for play-time, while the impressive 3-tier pool is directly behind the open area.
The compulsory breakfasts, which you must pay for even if you do not eat anything, are according to www.tripadvisor.com contributors unappealing. The Java Restaurant serves good food, with the profiteroles a highlight.
