Ao Nang Villa

Introduction

Located next to the sea and close to the soaring limestone cliffs that separate Ao Nang from Railay, the Ao Nang Villa Resort occupies a prime position. One of Ao Nang’s top resorts, the only thing that is really wrong with this large resort is the bread that accompanies breakfast, which is unappetizing. If you care about your breakfast bread then book through us as, in addition to an unbeatable price, we’ll supply you with a freshly-baked granary or brown loaf on check-in (and ask the staff to toast it for you for breakfast).

Whilst the bread is a problem for some people, the location of the breakfast restaurant certainly isn’t. One of the best spots in Ao Nang, you can see the sea and Poda Island through a screen of casuarinas trees – eating breakfast here makes a great start to the day. The only thing that separates you from the beach is a small, mainly pedestrian access road. If parents want to drink an extra cup of coffee and their children want to run straight over to the beach, the parents can still see them close by. The hotel enjoys a great location in a quiet spot by the beach and very close to most of Ao Nang’s amenities.

The hotel’s comfortable lobby is light and airy, with a pool view and gleaming floorboards. The infrastructure of this 6-year old hotel is showing small signs of wear and tear (a little rust here and there, plus some stained tiles and a few wall sections needing a lick of paint), so the resort’s infrastructure can’t be described as being in completely pristine condition. All of the rooms inspected by this writer were spotlessly clean and most, but not all of them, were in immaculate condition. This resort gets mixed reviews on www.tripadvisor.com, presumably due to this variability in the rooms’ conditions. One tripadvisor contributor described his room as “filthy, mould everywhere, shower ceiling collapsing, curtains torn, air-con filthy, cracks in wall.”

Some of the rooms are close enough to the road for their occupants to be disturbed by a little distant traffic noise – if you want a guaranteed quiet balcony, contact us. The expensive and compulsory Xmas and New Year’s buffets have a bad reputation, so if travelling then, consider staying elsewhere.

Restaurants

The hotel’s ten food and beverage outlets get reasonable write-ups on websites such as www.tripadvisor.com, but are expensive compared with the price of the fare on offer nearby in Ao Nang’s many and varied quality restaurants – see the map for details.

Pools

The two huge pools are well-maintained and popular with children, for whom this resort is a good choice, as it affords easy access to the beach as well as the 2 pools, plus lots of green spaces to run around in. Competition for pool-loungers in peak season in high, so you need to get up early to get one.

Spa

In the attractively decorated spa, in which bowls of lillavadee flower petals floating in water are dotted about, you can have a massage while watching (usually through drooping eyelids) the palm trees swaying in the sea breeze. The prices are a bit steep compared to those in the massage shops a few steps away, but the quality here is much more reliable.

Other Facilities

The adult games room has a pool table and table tennis, but is bit dingy, so pool-players are advised to go elsewhere. The children’s room is a small room containing some plastic toys and a slide, with no staff on hand to supervise – best forgotten about. The fitness room has seven machines.

Accommodation

‘Standard - 37sqm

Overlook the pool and gardens.

‘Superior’ - 44sqm

Some of these rooms, which are innocuously decorated but which exhibit no Thai influences and could be located anywhere in the world, have a great mountain view, others not so great, contact us for a room with a view.

‘Superior Sea-View’ - 44sqm

20 metres from the beach, but with overhead cables marring the sea-view. There are no mosquito nets on the doors, so you can’t leave them open and listen to the waves lap the shore.

‘Deluxe Lanai’ - 48sqm

The main benefit of this room is that is has its own sun-deck and loungers overlooking the coral pool, so occupants don’t have to worry about not getting up early enough to bag a sun-lounger by the pool.
