Ao Nang Mountain Paradise Resort
Location
This resort is 3 km from the beach and 1 km from anywhere, so in order to stay here guests need to either:
(a) Rent a motorbike – riding around is a joy, if you are safe to do it – THB 250/day for a manual bike
(b) Catch tuk-tuks to and from town – about THB 30 per person each way.
Introduction
The exterior areas of the resort show some signs of wear and tear such as peeling paint and scruffy, mossy walkways, but these are not so significant as to detract from the setting of this budget resort, which is stupendous. The grounds, which are not well maintained, are airy, open and spacious. They afford lots of room for children to run around in, and for adults who like open space and to feel unconfined.
Whilst there is lots of room for children to run around, however, the grounds are rather scruffy and unkempt, and some parents may not feel relaxed with their children running around in them. Half of the ‘Standard’ bungalows, but none of the ‘VIP’ bungalows, face the huge and nearby limestone cliffs that soar hundreds of metres into the sky and are extremely pretty, especially when softly lit at sunset. The pool is small and a bit scruffy, with moss growing over the surrounding area. It has a lovely little ‘sala’ (thatched, open-sided, wooden hut) that has comfortable seating and is a pleasant place to while away time.
Restaurant
The restaurant staff are very friendly and serve good and inexpensive Thai food, but as with all budget places, the Western breakfast is not good, so if you are particular about your breakfast, then either:
(a) Stay somewhere else
(b) Let us know what sort of bread you like, and we’ll give you a complimentary loaf on arrival.
(c) Go somewhere else for breakfast. Ao Nang has 3 great places for breakfast, Gift’s, Pam’s and A-One. To get to any of them will for most people require a tuk-tuk ride or a motorbike ride.
Bungalows
The clean and simple ‘Standard’ fan bungalows are basically furnished and decorated and have a pair of fairly comfortable loungers on their private but overlooked terraces. If you like a bungalow and not a hotel room, are on a limited budget and don’t mind scruffy grounds and having to travel into town every time you want to do or buy something, then this resort is a good bet.
The ‘Superior’ bungalows are the same as the ‘Standard’, except that they have air/con.
The clean ‘VIP’ bungalows are hardly any fancier that the ‘Standard’ and, as they are made of wood, let in mosquitoes. They are also a bit overpriced (by the resort, that is, not us!).
